FLEA and TICK Awareness Month!
Fleas are parasites that survive on the blood of their host. Fleas multiply rapidly, laying literally hundreds of eggs in your pet's coat. A few can quickly become a full-blown infestation. Your veterinarian can prescribe one of the many different products available to help eliminate fleas on your pet and in the environment.

Dogs and cats are basically fast food for the hungry flea. It hops on, fills up on the blood of your pet then hops off to spend the rest of its life on your floor, in your rug or carpet, nesting in pet bedding or lounging in the grass in your yard.

Flea prevention depends on treating both your pet and your pet's environment. One tip is to use a once a month flea preventative year round. Weather patterns are unpredictable, especially in Texas, and flea season can start before you are ready. Some other tips are to use foggers and/or premise sprays and to empty your vacuum cleaner bags frequently.

Fleas can cause serious medical problems such as flea allergy dermatitis, tapeworms, secondary skin irritation and, in extreme cases, anemia. If a flea problem gets out of control, see your veterinarian for help. By working together as a team, you and your veterinarian can win the war against fleas.
